Our last site of the day was the Castelo dos Mouros or Castle of the Moors that is perched high above the town if Sintra.
Many are tempted to start here since the castle is easily spotted from Sintra coming in on the train and appears close. But I definitely recommend to finish your day here. It is much easier and enjoyable to walk down that up.
The Castle of the Moors is a medieval castle build and defended by the Moors. The castle was constructed during the 8th and 9th centuries during the period of Muslim Iberia. It was a strategic point during the Reconquista but fell to Christian forces after the fall of Lisbon. It is now a national monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Situated atop the Sintra mountains, the view of the surrounding area, the Atlantic coast, and Sintra below is incredible. Take your time walking around the 450 metre perimeter and enjoy the views.
It is really amazing how the castle is incorporated into the rocky cliffs which was necessary to protect its population over time.
Here are some pictures taken along the wall walk.
