This was our first stop of the day in Sintra. The Quinta da Regaleira is a short walk from the train station and center of town. On the way we stopped for some pastries and cappuccinos to gather strength for the morning. The property is large, and consists of a romantic palace, a chapel, a luxurious park with lakes, fountains, benches, underground passageways (Labyrinthic Grotto), and wells. The estate is also known as “The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire” a nickname of the most famous previous owner.
António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. purchased the land from the Barons of Regaleira in 1892 and set out to build his palace and estate with the Italian architect Luigi Manini. The architecture shows Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles and was constructed between 1904-1910.
